Shade Commons is a reconfigurable public pavilion developed from locally sourced recycled HDPE. Building on material experiments from Plastic Reimagined, the project scales recycled plastic from small prototypes into an architectural envelope composed of pressed sheets, CNC-cut shingles, and a lightweight steel frame.
Two paired gabled structures pivot between compact and open configurations, allowing the pavilion to shift between enclosure, shade, threshold, display, and gathering space. The overlapping HDPE cladding preserves the colors, textures, and variations of its recycled material sources while forming a modular system designed for repair, replacement, and disassembly.
Installed at LOOP in Atlanta, Shade Commons transforms recovered material into an adaptable piece of public architecture—one that can change with different programs, occupations, and events while making the afterlife of plastic visible as part of its architectural expression.
